ESB stands for Extra Special Bitter. Bitter is what the British call pale ale. ESB is the best of the English Pales, there is also Bitter and Special Bitter. This ale is rich and malty with hints of toffee and caramel. The hop flavors are assertive and balance nicely. English Fuggle and East Kent Goldings are very expensive and used exclusively in ESB. This ale is also served on nitrogen to mimic the smooth English cask pour.
